Home Made Visible at the sixth annual York University Department of History’s Public History Symposium.

The Symposium will showcase organizations in Toronto that are dedicated to preserving the historical records of immigrants and their organizations, and democratizing access to historical knowledge in and about their communities. Join Home Made Visible’s Project Manager Elizabeth Mudenyo for a round table discussion on Diversifying Collections, Then and Now.

We’re excited to announce that the Home Made Visible collection is now available online thanks our Archival Partner, York University Libraries website! You can view select excerpts from participants here.

The collection is still growing, and will be the first home video archive featuring Indigenous and Visible Minority stories in Canada. Project Artistic Director, Ananya Ohri was invited to speak at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference on Saturday, March 17th, 2018. Ananya did a case study on Home Made Visible: Regent Park, an event held at the 2017 Festival that invited past and present residents of Regent Park to a story sharing circle that celebrates the memory of pre-revitalized Regent Park.

What is the impact of a personal archive on an entire community?

Regent Park is Canada’s oldest and largest housing project. It is currently being redeveloped into a mixed-income community. For the last 15 years many people have told the story of Regent Park, a meta-narrative of troubled inner-city life and poor design. How does developing counter-archive, through shared storytelling, inform our understanding of community spaces and city building from the perspective of those who (continue) to experience displacement?
