HMV goes on tour to 16 locations nationwide! Home Made Visible brings a personal lens to Indigenous and visible minority archives through FREE exhibitions, screenings, and workshops in libraries across Canada.

The exhibition consists of six short films and a mixed media installation by our commissioned artists. See their works in person at the libraries and sign up for workshops to learn how to building on your own personal archive.

‘What Is Home?’

We highlight the importance of telling our own stories and making content outside the digital realm and creating our own archival material.

This is a hands-on workshop and every participant will come out with a zine that they can take home.

One of the oldest ways to preserve and pass on our own histories, storytelling traditions stretch back millennia. Participants are asked to bring with them a short, oral story, either personal or familial, that they are comfortable sharing in an open circle. If the story is centered around an object such as a photograph or a letter, etc. participants are encouraged to bring the object. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Home Made Visible commissioned Indigenous filmmakers Lisa Jodoin, Jennifer Dysart, and Nadine Arpin are hosting a workshop exploring the idea of the personal archive. In this workshop participants are asked to bring an object of significance to share with a small group. Through activities and exercises, the facilitators will guide workshop participants in expressing the memory and story attached to those objects to then produce a new personal archive: a digital audio/photo file, a mailable postcard or an attachable memory tag. This is a hands-on workshop and every participant will go home with leave both their original and new archival objects. Registration is required as space is limited to eight participants. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Home Made Visible has commissioned Mackenzie Whyte, a self-taught artist to host a workshop to explore the role of storytelling in archival practices. In this multi-disciplinary workshop participants will get to create archival memories by writing and painting logo/tattoo to represent their own life experiences. Each segment of the workshop will build on unpacking the power dynamic not always apparent in storytelling and how this intersects with the narratives selected for archives. INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES FOR TEENS In this workshop, participants will explore archiving family histories through interpersonal storytelling. They will learn the skills necessary to conduct an interview with their family or friends as well as documentation techniques. Ever wondered what kind of questions to ask when interviewing? How to effectively frame a question to receive the best answer? How to create a comfortable interview environment? Learn by practicing! Participants will be paired up for filmed interviews, and will leave with skills and a personal recordings, giving them an opportunity to start their own family archive.

They ask participants to come prepared with an item of significance; any object which holds a memory or story. Every participant will have the opportunity to create both digital and physical documentation of the object as a starting point to begin their own archival practice. Through activities and exercises, the facilitators will guide workshop participants in expressing the memory and story attached to their object and then produce a personal archive: an emailable digital audio file or a mailable photo postcard.

Local documentary filmmakers, Derek Kwan and Joella Cabalu, present a hands-on workshop on the foundations of storytelling and relationship-building skills needed to tell and create personal stories through the documentary format. Kwan and Cabalu will present their own work which touches on family histories, culture, and immigration, as well as share their experiences in developing stories, incorporating archival videos and photographs, and building trust within different communities.

Workshop: ‘Making Home’ May 9 from 6-8 pm Capacity: 10-15 (Please register in advance) Facilitator: Fiona Raye Clarke ‘Making Home’ is a two-hour creative writing workshop based on the Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) Method developed by Pat Schneider. It is designed to allow for safe creative expression and to reinforce the unique voice and self-esteem of the writer. Throughout the workshop, participants will explore their stories of home, celebrating what makes them feel at home, and envisioning what home looks like to them, real or imagined. Participants will create a suite of creative writing pieces through a process of timed writing exercises, sharing, giving positive feedback, and art-making using homemade poetry prompt templates, visual art, and collage materials.

Jennifer Dysart will be showing her new short film combining home movie footage of a northern Manitoba Cree woman hunting a caribou (in the the 1990s near South Indian Lake) with footage of Cree and Dene hunters in northern Manitoba taken in the 1940s by the National Film Board of Canada.

‘Stories in Motion’ a Stop-Motion Workshop

Everyone has connections to a story, but which stories get heard or recorded? In this 1.5-hour workshop, participants will learn how to create 6-word stories prompted by family sayings or idioms. The workshop will consist of developing 6-word stories through collage work and stop-motion videos.

This workshop will prioritize accessibility, community, and equity by creating an environment for participants to explore methods of storytelling and engage with popular education pedagogy. Through storytelling, participants will partake in mutual sharing and learning while learning various digital skills.

About the Artists

Jasmine and Kelly started an archival initiative called TACLA (The Asian Canadian Living Archive). This initiative believes in using our creative abilities to engage, expand, and critique the work of our elders, and tell our own stories to forge different ways within a decolonial praxis.

‘Memory Maker: Creating Video Stories’

Objects hold memories and stories, but these narratives often go unheard. In this hands-on workshop, up to 10 participants are invited to bring an item or photo that holds significance to them and to develop an oral recording around the object. Through a series of group and paired activities, we will develop and record a short 1 to 4 minute story of the object and create a short video in iMovie. Participants will have an opportunity to share their finished story with the group and be provided with a digital copy to share with family and friends. Time permitting, we will explore some of the tools in EPL’s Enterprise Square Makerspace to learn how they can be used to preserve and share other memories and stories.

Home Made Visible culminates in a public reception celebrating three years of preserving and engaging IBPOC archives. In partnership with Charles Street Video and York University Libraries we have digitized over 200 home movies, and completed a nation-wide tour of 7 commissioned works reflecting on our complicated relationship to archives. For this reception, we bring together the incredible community of people that have made this project possible. Join us, as we bring this project to a close. All commissioned works will be on display, and for the first time, guests can also view the home movie collection of digitized IBPOC archives on exhibition.
